Picking up several years after the events of 2017’s “War for the Planet of the Apes,” the 20th Century Studios franchise is back with a trailer for its newest chapter, “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” set to premiere May 24, 2024.
With Caesar dying at the end of the last film, the fourth entry in the modern “Planet of the Apes” saga will follow his son Cornelius, who was only a child in “War for the Planet of the Apes.” Cornelius must carry on his father’s legacy by preventing apes from twisting Caesar’s teachings to enslave other primates.
Joining the franchise, Owen Teague will provide the voice and motion capture of Cornelius. Other new cast members include Kevin Durand, Freya Allen, William H. Macy and Peter Macon.
Wes Ball, known for “The Maze Runner” trilogy, is directing from a screenplay by Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver and Patrick Aison. Jaffa, Silver, Joe Hartwick Jr. and Jason Reed produced the film, with Peter Chernin and Jenno Topping executive producing.
Production for the film began in Sydney in October 2022 and wrapped in February 2023, which Ball announced by posting a behind the scenes clip from the set.
The franchise, based on a novel by Pierre Boulle, has amassed more than $1.7 billion at the worldwide box office. The original series consisted of six films, which premiered between 1968 and 2001. The reboot series was then announced, and its first installment, “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” was released in 2011. It was then followed by “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” in 2014 and “War for the Planet of the Apes” in 2017. Disney acquired 20th Century Fox in April 2019 and announced more films in the franchise would go into production.
